Hornets Race Past 49ers
SACRAMENTO, CA—Sacramento State used an 11-0 run late in the second half to lift the Hornets to a 106-94 win over Long Beach State on Monday evening at the Hornet's Nest. Jazz Henderson led the 49ers (2-4) with a career-high 23 points while Jason Harris led the Hornets (5-3) with 25 points. Leading 82-79 with 7:05 left to play, the 49er defense lapsed as Sacramento State went on an 11-0 run over the next two minutes to grab a 90-82 lead with 5:06 remaining. Justin Williams and Jason Harris both had four points in that key run to spark the Hornets. Long Beach finally ended the skid on a layup by Dominque Ricks to cut the deficit to six, 90-84, but the 49ers would get no closer than five points (96-91, 1:53 left) the remainder of the contest. The Hornets, who were just 5-12 at the free throw line in the first half, were a perfect 20-20 at the charity stripe in the second stanza. "Too many easy baskets," commented 49er Head Coach Larry Reynolds. "They had too many penetrate kicks for lay-ups in the second half. We can't give up those types of shots, especially that late in the game. We didn't penetrate and attack the basket in the second half either. We shot only eight free throws in the half after shooting 16 in the first half." Henderson played his best game of the season for the 49ers finishing with a career-high 23 points. He scored 11 points in the first half and then came out on fire to start the second half. Henderson scored nine of the 49ers first 15 points of the second half staking Long Beach to a 65-60 lead at the 15:05 mark. After the Hornets battled back to take a 68-67 lead, the 49ers went on a 6-0 run on a three-pointer by Jibril Hodges and a three-point play by Ricks to give LBSU a 73-68 lead at 10:04. The 49ers last lead of the game was 82-81 at 6:44. Ricks stepped up in his third start as a 49er, finishing with a career-high 18 points and career-high 10 rebounds. Hodges added 15 points, hitting 5-of-11 shots from three-point range, and Aaron Nixon was the fourth 49er in double digits with 18 points. The Hornets had five players hit double digits as Haron Hargrave added 19 points, DaShawn Freeman 17, Loren Leath 14 and Alex Bausley 13. In a tight first half the 49ers closed out the last two minutes of the half with a 9-2 run to erase a 45-40 deficit and lead the 49ers into the lockerroom with a 49-47 advantage. The 49ers were 14-16 at the free throw line in the first half and knocked down five three-pointers. Sacramento State out-rebounded the 49ers 30 to 18 in the first half and 17 of the 30 boards were on the offensive glass, yet the 49ers still held a two-point halftime lead. Nixon scored 14 of his 18 in the first half. The Hornets were able to score a lot of easy baskets in the second half and shot .581 (18-31) from the field and 20-20 at the free throw line. Long Beach was just 6-8 at the charity stripe in the second half and shot .447 (17-38). The 49ers will next be in action on Saturday, December 10 when they host San Jose State at 2:05 pm in the Walter Pyramid. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
