49ers Top Dons in Overtime Willhoit Scores Career-High 11 Points

LONG BEACH, CA – The Long Beach State women's basketball team outscored San Francisco, 26-21 in the second half to force overtime, and 10-4 in the extra frame to capture a 58-52 victory from the Walter Pyramid on Sunday. It was the third straight victory for the 49ers.
Crystal McCutcheon led The Beach (3-2) with a game-high 14 points, including 3-of-8 from three-point range. Val Willhoit poured in a career-high 11 points and tied a career-high with seven rebounds. Willhoit also dished out six assists. Rosalyn Omoruyi chipped in with 10 points to highlight the top 49er scoring leaders. LaShaunte Stephens recorded 12 points for San Francisco (2-5) in the losing effort.
Long Beach State recovered from 24 percent shooting in the first half (9-for-37) with a 34 percent effort in the second period (11-for-32) and 40 percent in the overtime frame (2-for-5). The 49ers had more rebounds (45-44), steals (11-8), and committed fewer turnovers (18) to the Dons' 27.
The 49ers were down by as many as 12 points in the first half (24-12) at the 3:30 mark, before going on a 10-3 run to end the half to cut the halftime deficit to five points (22-27).
San Francisco pushed its lead to eight to start the second half (30-22), before consecutive three-pointers by McCutcheon at 16:42 and 15:20 tied the score at 30-30. The Dons held a four-point lead (44-40) with 5:37 remaining in the contest, but a jumper by McCutcheon and a three-pointer from Willhoit gave LBSU a 45-44 lead at the 4:12 mark. Nykia Peace's jumper with 1:36 left in regulation tied the score at 48-48.
A McCutcheon three-pointer in the overtime frame put The Beach up by four (54-50), and consecutive foul shouts from Willhoit in the final seconds preserved the six-point victory.
Long Beach State moved to 1-1 in overtime games this season. The 49ers travel to Montana State on Dec. 8 and Montana on Dec 10.
