49ers Drop 99-95 Decision At Portland
PORTLAND, OR— Portland used a 17-0 run midway through to second half to erase a 74-66 deficit and defeat Long Beach State 99-95 on Saturday evening at the Chiles Center. The Pilots shot a blistering .610 from the field for the game to snap a three-game losing skid and improve to 2-5 on the season. Long Beach saw its modest two-game win streak snapped, falling to 2-3. Portland trailed 74-66 with 9:16 left to play before Pooh Jeter took over. Jeter scored 15 of Portland's 17 points lifting the Pilots to an 85-76 lead with 5:54 left. Long Beach was able to cut the deficit to one point at 88-87 with 2:52 left, but the Pilots went on 6-0 run to take a 94-87 lead with 51 seconds left in the contest. Long Beach would pull to within two points (97-95) with six seconds left after a three-pointer by Sterling Byrd, but Jeter hit two free throws with four seconds left to seal the win. Shawn Hawkins led the way for the 49ers with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists, but scored just seven points in the second half. Jibril Hodges added 17 points and Kevin Houston 13 for the 49ers who shot a respectable .548 (34-62) from the field for the contest. "Their run was highlighted mainly by tremendous play from Jeter," said Head Coach Larry Reynolds. "We were scrambling defensively and taking chances. They also took 24 free throws in the second half compared to just nine in the first half. I thought we could have done a better job defending the post than we did." Long Beach came out strong in the first half, leading by as many as eight points several times, before settling for a 46-42 halftime lead. The 49ers shot .533 (16-30) from the field in the first half and knocked down six-of-nine three-pointers. Hawkins was 3-3 from long range and Hodges 2-3. Darren Cooper added 19 points for the Pilots, while Marcus Lewis had 15 and Kevin Field 14. The third post player for the Pilots, Ben Sullivan, finished with 13 points and seven boards. All told, the three Portland big men accounted for 42 points. "We should have attacked the basket more in the second half instead of settling for shots from the perimeter," said Reynolds. "We didn't defend as well as we wanted to. We didn't bring that part of our intensity tonight." The 49ers continue their road trip on Monday when they face off against Sacramento State at 7:30 pm at the Hornet's Nest in Sacramento. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
