49ers Finish Fall On A High Note High Rankings According To Golfstate And Golfweek November 8, 2005 PDF Version of Release
LONG BEACH, CA--The Long Beach State women's golf team wrapped up a great fall season by being ranked No. 21 in the country in the latest Golfstat national rankings, it's highest team ranking in school history. The 49ers are also ranked No. 26 in Golfweek and are the highest ranked team in the Big West Conference.
The 49ers finished no worse than seventh place in their four fall tournaments, and came in third at the Kent Youel Invitational in Hawaii and fourth at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins, CO. At the Kent Youel Invitational (Nov. 1-2), the 49ers finished behind USC and Stanford to take third place, while finishing ahead of such programs as California, Baylor, San Jose State, Fresno State, Texas Tech and Oregon State.
At the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Washington (Oct. 10-12) the 49ers finished in seventh place in one of the toughest tournaments on the West Coast, but finished ahead of California, Washington, Oregon, BYU, Washington State and Oregon State.
Leading the way have been sophomore Kay Hoey (Rancho Cucamonga) and senior Hayley Wilkinson (Bundaberg, Queensland). Both players are ranked in the latest Golfweek Rankings as Hoey checks in at No. 38 and Wilkinson at No. 107. Hoey has three Top 10 finishes in the four tournaments, including tying for third at the Kent Youel Invitational. She shot a season-best 216 (70-73-73) at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic and a 217 (73-72-72) at the Price's/NMSU Intercollegiate, where she finished in fourth place. Hoey leads the 49ers with an average score of 73.92. Wilkinson recently tied for fifth at the Kent Youel Invitational with a 224 (73-74-77) and shot a season-best 223 (75-76-72) at the Price's/NMSU Intercollegiate to tie for 13th place. She has steadily moved up in the Golfweek Rankings, jumping from No. 150 to No. 107 in the last week and has an average score of 75.42.
The 49ers have also received strong performances from sophomores Katy Barrett (Las Vegas, NV) and Kira Murashige (Hilo, HI), junior Beth Holtermann (Wasco) and freshman Josefine Lindbergh (Ahus, Sweden).
Barrett recently tied for 12th at the Kent Youel Invitational with a 228, Holtermann tied for 23rd at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational with a 231, Murashige tied for 19th at Edean Ihlanfeldt with a season-best 229 and Lindbergh tied for 40th at the Price's/NMSU Intercollegiate with a season-best score of 230.
The 49ers have concluded their fall tournament schedule and are off until the spring. Their first tournament will be on February 27-28 when they compete at the Fresno State Invitational.
