49ers Fall in Shootout to UCR
FULLERTON, CA-- Long Beach State women's soccer (12-5-3), despite outshooting UC Riverside (11-3-5) 12-to-7, lost in a shoot out, as the UCR advanced to the Big West Championship game on Sunday. The Highlanders won the shootout 4-to-2, as the two teams played to a scoreless tie after 110 minutes, and have not scored against one another in the series since 2003. The 49ers have an outside chance at an at-large berth into next weekend's NCAA Tournament as the bracket will be announced on Monday. The 49ers had a chance in the second overtime to win it, but Kim Silos (Ontario) shot in the 105th minute was saved by Tawny Poggio in goal for UCR. LBSU tried to go ahead in the 81st minute as Elizabeth Romo's (Whittier) shot was saved. UCR had two shots picked up by 49er goalie Liz Ramos (Bakersfield) in the 61st and 75th minutes. The 49ers had two chances in the first half to break the scoreless tie, both off of Sahar Haghdan (Palmdale) opportunties. In the 30th minute, a Haghdan breakaway and shot was caught by Poggio. Then three minutes later, after Haghdan was fouled, and the ensuing offensive possession saw Hayley Bolt's (Lakewood) shot saved and Sara Baca's (Ventura) rebounded shot knocked out by the UCR defense. |
