LONG BEACH, CA-- Shawn Hawkins led with a team high 19 points as Long Beach State (2-2) cruised to a 93-85 non-conference victory over Loyola Marymount (1-4) Wednesday night in front of 1,722 at The Walter Pyramid. It was the 49ers' eighth-straight home win dating back to last season and second in a row. It was LMU's fourth straight loss.
"He went out there and dominated, I thought very good all around game and he's a hard guy for other teams to match up with. They've got 6-10, 6-11 kids and they had a trouble guarding him," said Head Coach Larry Reynolds. "This could be a very tough place for opponents to play, and it just wears on you after awhile. And it's great to see the students come out and support the guys." Kevin Houston added 16 points and Aaron Nixon had 12 points and four assists. Sterling Byrd added 12 points on four three-pointers. LBSU shot 49 percent for the game. Matthew Knight led LMU with a career-high of 32 points and a career-best 18 rebounds as the Lions shot 40 percent from the field (19-44) and 71 percent from free-throw line (15-21).
With 15:07 left in the second half Sterling Byrd's back-to-back three pointers increased the lead to 17 points, 57-40. "He's a tremendous shooter and he was kind of hiding over there and no one was paying attention to him," said Reynolds. "When Jibril Hodges is not in the game and suddenly he's (Byrd) knocking down some three's. When he's that hot, you have to at least let him miss just one." In the first half, the 49ers shot 42 percent from the field as Houston led the 49ers with eight points going into intermission with a 41-31 lead. With 4:01 remaining in the first half, a layup by LMU's Knight closed the gap to within four, 26-22. The 49ers pulled away with a 32-24 lead thanks to a Hawkins three-pointer with 3:05 left.
The 49ers hit the road for a two-game trip, as they travel to Portland December 3 and Sacramento State on Decmeber 5, before returning home to The Walter Pyramid on December 10 as they host San Jose State at 2:05 pm. |
