Weaver Named to Team USA Qualifying Team DURHAM, NC-- Former Long Beach State righthander, Jered Weaver (Simi Valley) was one of 25 players selected to play for Team USA in the 2005 CONCEBE Regional Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona from November 15 to 19. Weaver, the 2004 National Player of the Year, spent his first professional season at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and Double-A Arkansas in 2005 going 7-4 with a 3.91 ERA. He struck out 95 and walked just 26 over 76 innings of work. This is Weaver's second stint with Team USA, as he was named Baseball America's Player of the Summer in 2003, after setting a national team record with an 0.38 ERA thanks to 45.2 consecutive scoreless innings. He is the second former professional player from LBSU to make the Team USA roster and ninth player overall from the Dirtbag program. In three seasons at LBSU (2002-04), Weaver set the career record for wins (37-9) and strikeouts (431). He was a two-time first team All-American and first round pick of the Angels in 2004. Six countries from North and Central America are slated to compete in Arizona, with the top four finishers advancing to the Americas Olympic Qualifier in Havana, Cuba, in August, 2006. Four more teams from the Carribean and South America will then compete for four bids to the Beijing Olympics in 2008. TEAM USA GAME SCHEDULE |
