Endowed Scholarship Named For Bob Wuesthoff LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State baseball announced this month that it is endowing a scholarship in the name of former Head Coach Bob Wuesthoff, who coached the 49ers from 1964 to 1969 and won the program's first conference title. The seven-man committee of former players, led by LBSU's first Coach John McConnell and continuing with former players (and coaches) John Gonsalves, Rick Hayes, Barry Wallace, Rod Gaspar, Jack Hoffman and Rick Bryson, are in the process of raising $150,000 over five years. Already, without much publicity, the team has raised just over $60,000, including $14,000 this year. Wuesthoff, who has run the 49er Camps for children, every summer for over four decades, began his career as the freshman junior varsity coach for two seasons in 1962. He took over the program in 1964 and won the California Collegiate Atheltic Association title that same year. In six years, Wuesthoff compiled a .615 winning percentage, going 161-101-4 from 1964 to 1969. He continued teaching in the physical education department at Long Beach State into the new Millenium, before retiring. He was also a former associate athletics director at LBSU and the interim athletics director in the fall of 1969. Those interested in donating can contact Dede Rossi in the 49er Athletics Association at (562) 985-4662. The 49ers hold an annual alumni baseball game, this year on January 28, coinciding with the Leadoff Dinner on January 26, and a golf tournament on January 27. |
