LONG BEACH, CA--The Long Beach State men's basketball team (1-2) made their 2005-06 home debut with a 108-51 victory over visiting division-II San Francisco State (0-2) at The Walter Pyramid Sunday afternoon. The 49ers first win of the season was their seventh-straight at home dating back to last season.
Jibril Hodges led six 49ers in double figures with 17 points, including 5-of-10 from the field. The Beach missed a single-game record, shooting 11-of-18 (61.1%) from three-point range and outrebounded San Francisco State 46-36 for the game.
"I thought we attacked the basket well and shared the basekball," said 49ers Head Coach Larry Reynolds. "We had a good ratio of assists to turnovers today. Aaron Nixon played well tonight. He had five assists and distrubted the ball as well, scoring 15 points. I thought Artis Gant played extremely well for just his third game as a collegiate."
San Francisco State shot 30 percent for the game as Lawrence Metz had 12 points and six rebounds.
In the first half, the 49ers, who never trailed in the game, led as many as 31 points, 56-25 with 1:14 remaining. Sterling Byrd made 3-of-3 from 3-point range for nine points as The Beach shot 60% (18-30) from the field as they went into halftime 59-28.
With 5:32 left in the second half, the 49ers hit the century mark for the first time since December 29, 2001 when they defeated IPFW 105-70.
The 49ers next game will be on Wednesday, Nov. 30, when they host Loyola Marymount at 8:05 pm in The Walter Pyramid. |
