49ers Fall At Cal, 88-69
BERKELEY, CA— Cal used its superior height advantage to come away with an 88-69 win over Long Beach State on Monday evening at Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears picked up their first win of the season (1-1), while the 49ers fell to 0-2. Jibril Hodges led the 49ers with 15 points while Aaron Nixon added 13. Leading the way for the Golden Bears was Omar Wilkes with 18 points, DeVon Hardin added 14 points and 10 rebounds and Rod Benson chipped in with 14 points and six boards. Cal had five players tally in double digits. Cal was able to out-rebound the 49ers 47 to 30, recorded 25 second chance points and 46 points in the paint. The Golden Bears shot .470 (31-66) from the field for the game and limited the 49ers to a .397 (23-58) field goal percentage. 49er Dominque Ricks had a strong outing recording nine points and nine rebounds and Shawn Hawkins added 10 points and five rebounds. The 49ers had just 14 turnovers on the evening, but were 7-27 (.259) from three-point range. Trailing by 12 (59-47) early in the second half the 49ers went on a 6-0 run, capped by a Hodges three, to pull to within 59-54 with 11:02 left. Cal then was able to extend the lead back to double digits. At the end, the Bears were able to score on several fastbreak opportunities and capitalized on its free throw shooting as well down the stretch. The 49ers got off to a great start in the first half, jumping to a 17-11 lead after two Nixon free throws at 13:24. Long Beach still led 23-22 at the 9:17 mark, but Cal would go on a 24-11 run to close out the half, taking a 46-34 advantage. Long Beach had just four field goals in the final ten-plus minutes of the half. Cal's height advantage was key in the half as the 6-11 Hardin had 10 first half points and the 6-10 Benson nine. Cal shot .472 (17-36) in the half, while the 49ers struggled shooting 11-26 overall and just 2-13 from three-point range. The 49ers stayed in the game thanks to 10-14 shooting at the free throw line. The 49ers return home on Sunday, November 27 for their home opener when they take on San Francisco State at 2:05 pm in the Walter Pyramid. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
