Basketball Season Starts Friday

Basketball Season Begins Friday LONG BEACH, CA-- Basketball season offically gets underway on Friday, October 14 when both Long Beach State basketball teams hold their first official practices in the Gold Mine on campus. The women will practice from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., while the men get going from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. The men's team will also hold a three-point, Shoot-A-Thon at approximately 10 p.m. with all proceeds going to the Red Cross. Admission is free. It will be a busy day for Long Beach State athletics as the women's volleyball team hosts CS Fullerton at the Walter Pyramid starting at 7:30 p.m. Fans can walk to the 49ers' former home, approximately a five-minute walk from The Walter Pyramid, or park in the Brotman Hall parking lot. Season tickets are also on sale for both teams, as men's tickets go from $95 to $160, while women's tickets are $45 and $65. Tickets can be purchased online at www.longbeachstate.com or by calling (562) 985-4949. The men's team, under fourth-year Head Coach Larry Reynolds, return their top two returning scorers in Shawn Hawkins and Jibril Hodges, and feature an up-tempo offense which will include one of last year's top junior college players in the state, Aaron Nixon. The women under third-year Coach Mary Hegarty, are coming off a 19-win season, and return three starters in power forward Jayme Connors and guards Crystal McCutcheon and former Long Beach Wilson product Jeannie Saunders. |
