Dirtbags No. 22 by Baseball America DURHAM, NC-- With up to a trio of All-Americans, the nation isn't quite sure what to make of this year's Long Beach State Dirtbags. The 49ers are ranked No. 22 in Baseball America's pre-season poll, a far different ranking than Collegiate Baseball's No. 14 national placing. Baseball America's All-America team was released on Thursday. What is known is the team returns five starters including pre-season All-American shortstop Troy Tulowitzki (Sunnyvale), another All-American in lefthanded starter Cesar Ramos (Pico Rivera) and a full and much deeper bullpen complimented by All-American righthanded closer Neil Jamison (San Diego).LBSU returned to its second-straight Super Regional last season, finishing at 40-21. "With the experience Cesar and Troy got with Team USA this summer, I know they came in ready to handle anything. They know they are the go-to guys and with others, took the team and said it's our time," said fourth-year Head Coach Mike Weathers in this year's team preview. "The team chemistry is as good as any team we've had, the young arms have been impressive in the fall, and the staff's a lot deeper. The defense is right there, backing up our pitching and our hitters have bought into our philosophy as good as any team I've coached. We are also going be able to run a little more. I really like this team." The Beach open up the 2005 campaign at No. 9-ranked Arizona State starting on January 28. LBSU will host Alumni Weekend starting on January 20 with the annual Leadoff Dinner, featuring keynote speaker Bobby Crosby, followed by a golf tournament on Friday and the alumni game starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Season tickets go on sale January 15 by calling (562) 985-4949. LBSU can also be followed on the airwaves, as KWRM-1370 AM is the official flagship.
