49ers Defeat Drake, 1-0
LONG BEACH, CA-- It didn't take long for Long Beach State forward Allison Reeves (Lakewood) to warm up after halftime, tallying the 49ers only goal, at 48:24, to keep The Beach (2-0-1) undefeated and lead them to a 1-0 win over Drake (0-3-0) in the nightcap of the 49er Classic. UC Davis (1-1-0) won the tournament's earlier contest over Iona (0-3-0) 2-0. LBSU is off to its best start since the program began Big West play in 1998. Reeves took over the team's point lead with her second career goal, firing a five-yarder and Kristin Travis (Davis) and Hilary Goldberg (Woodbridge) passed the ball from the right corner into the box three and a half minutes into the second half. Drake won the battle of the shots, 16-to-9, but LBSU for the second straight contest unloaded in the second half, taking seven shots. Niner defender Natalie Messina (Santa Rosa) would be a valuable asset on defense, making key defense stops throughout the contest. The Classic continues on Sunday, AT LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGE, with Drake facing UC Davis at 10 a.m. and the 49ers playing Iona at 1 p.m. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
