Messina Named Big West's Best Player IRVINE, CA-- Long Beach State defender Natalie Messina (Santa Rosa) was named the Big West Conference's Player of the Week after the sophomore scored the game-winning goal in the 95th minute on Sunday and was named the Bluejay Classic's Most Valuable Player. This is the first weekly honor for the Messina in her career. This season alone, Messina has twice been named a tournament's top player, garnering all-tournament accolades in each of the team's three tournaments. Messina also helped the 49ers win their second tournament of the season, as The Beach posted back-to-back shutouts in Omaha, NE. On Friday, LBSU defeated South Dakota State, 3-0, limiting the Jackrabbits without a shot for the first 55 minutes and just five for the contest. Two days later the 49ers defeated Creighton 1-0 in overtime on a set play. In the 95th minute, Allison Wiegand tapped a free kick forward, setting the ball in motion and giving way to Messina, who fired the game-winner from 25 yards out. The 49ers, off to their best non-conference start in school-history, at 5-3-1, begin Big West play this weekend when they travel to UC Santa Barbara on Friday at 7 p.m. and Cal Poly on Sunday at 11 a.m.
