Beach Storms Omaha with 34 Shot
OMAHA, NE-- Mom always said feed a flu, and if she was a soccer mom, she said you need to shoot to score. And Long Beach State (4-3-1) did just that on the first day of the Bluejay Classic, tallying a record 34 shots in a 3-0 over South Dakota State (2-5-0). LBSU scored in the 30th, 55th and 82nd minutees, and bombarded the Jack Rabbits with 15 more shots on goal. Kristin Travis (Davis) tallied a single-game record nine shots, including a goal and an assist. Allison Wiegand (Modesto) also had a goal and an assist. The win snaps a three-match losing streak by The Beach. South Dakota State was held shotless in the first half and did not take their first shot until the 55th minute. SDSU had just five for the contest. LBSU goalie Tara Gotthardt (Pleasanton) benefited from the team's backline, posting her third shutout of the season. Wiegand scored the first tally, at 29:34, off a free kick from Amy Leipham, before Hilary Goldberg (Woodbridge) off a rebounded cross from Travis and Wiegand at 54:06 to make it 2-0. LBSU ended the scoring at 81:44 when Travis scored off her own deflected rebound. LBSU took 18 shots on goal on the night, including 11 in the second half. LBSU had 16 shots in the first half and 18 more in the second. The 49ers' previous records for shots in a game was 27 set last year when LBSU beat Idaho 3-1. The 49ers will next play host Creighton on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. PST. Creighton played North Dakota State on Friday evening. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
