49ers Fall 1-0 in Hawaii
WAIPAHU, HI-- Two-time Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year Natasha Kai stole an intended touch pass back by the 49er defense and scored the eventual game-winner in the 49th minute of the second half to give Hawaii (4-2-1) a 1-0 win over visiting Long Beach State (3-2-1). LBSU, despite seven shots on goal, dropped its second in a row. The Beach had a chance to tie it in the 78th minute but Kristin Travis' point-blank shot was stopped by defender Tia Medeiros in the goal, followed by a shot high by MacKenzie Blechel. Blechel and defender Natalie Messina were both named all-tournament. The winning goal was setup when the defense passed it back to goalie Meghan Hartwyk, but before the ball could get to it, Kai stole it and sent it in from five yards out.The 49er offense showed signs of life late in the first half after both teams exchanged passes for much of the first half. LBSU had two shots on goal over the final 10 minutes, with each saved by Chow. Kai had a chance to give Hawaii a lead in the 44th minute, hitting a shot off Hartwyk, before missing a header off the ensuing corner kick. LBSU travels to San Diego on Friday for a contest at 5 p.m. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
