49ers Suffer First Loss of the Season
WAIPIO, HI-- Three-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference pick Casey McCluskey scored two first half goals as No. 30-ranked Duke (4-2-0) triumphed 3-0 over previously undefeated Long Beach State (3-1-1) late Saturday night in the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Classic. With the win, Duke wins the tournament after a 2-0 shutout of Hawaii on Friday night. Duke outshot The Beach 13-to-1 in the first half and 20-to-2 for the contest, taking 11 shots on goal. LBSU forward Allison Wiegand (Modesto) had a chance to cut the lead in half early in the second half, but her shot was saved by Honolulu native Allison Lipsher in the 58th minute, keeping the game at 2-0. McCluskey's second net finder went off the finger tips of LBSU goalie Tara Gotthardt (Pleasanton), at 33:36, after Kate Seibert sent it ahead on the left side. McCluskey put Duke on the board at exactly 20:00, dribbling 10 yards down the left wing before firing one past Gotthardt. Lauren Tippets picked up her second assist of the game, sending it ahead to Carolyn Riggs in the 77th minute, who bounced it over Gotthardt's head for the third goal of the night. The goal broke a string of 398:20 consecutive scoreless minutes, including 255:00 this season, against the 49er keeper. The match saw intermittent showers throughout the evening. The Beach and Hawaii will play for second place on Monday at 8 p.m. when the classic concludes. LBSU then continues their seven-match roadtrip in San Diego on Friday, September 17. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
