49ers, USF End Up with Shutouts
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State goalie Tara Gotthardt (Plesanton) stopped a career-best nine shots as the 49ers (1-0-1) and the University of San Francisco tied 0-0 in each team's second match of the season. USF came out firing, taking nine shots in the first half, of which six were stopped by Gotthardt. LBSU, meanwhile, managed just two first half shots before reeling off eight in the second half. USF, who won the war of the shots, 16 to 11, managed take just seven more shots over the final 65 minutes. LBSU counted with 10 shots over the same time period. Both teams had its chances at the end, as USF forward Shuree Hytatt's shot late in the second overtime went wide, while Kristin Travis' fifth and final shot of the day was stopped by USF goalie Stephanie Beall (Chula Vista). Beall ended up making seven saves, including four in the second half. LBSU hovered around the goal for most of the second half, as Travis missed two shots early in the second, before Nori Readdy (Davis) took her chances, missing a header in the 75th minute and then firing wide in the 81st minute. Amber Olivera's shot seven minutes into the first overtime also went wide. Today's contest will be aired on Comcast Channel 3 next Saturday at 5 p.m. LBSU is next in action next Friday and Sunday when they host the 49er Classic, featuring Iona, Drake and UC Davis.
