49ers Win Season Opener 2-1 Over Sac State
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State women's soccer (1-0-0) fired off 13 shots and senior midfielder Allison Wiegand (Modesto) gave new Head Coach Mauricio Ingrassia something to smile about, by scoring the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over visiting Sacramento State (0-1-0). It was the season opener for both clubs. Wiegand's header in the 64th minute off a free kick from Shanna Wender (Fresno) led to the franchise's first season opening win since joining the Big West in 1998. Wiegand's 15th career goal and 36th career points moved her into fourth place all-time on the 49er charts. LBSU showed a strong offense early, firing off three shots over the first seven minutes, including Kristin Travis' (Davis) goal at 7:12 to give LBSU a 1-0 lead. Travis beat the defense and then fired in the season's first goal from 10 yards out. Sacramento State, which was held without a shot for the first 20 minutes, tied the contest up at 1-1 at 62:22 when Jennifer Iha took a pass from Maggie Murphy and beat LBSU goalie Meghan Hartwyk to score from eight yards out. The Hornets had a chance to tie it in the 86th minute, but Linda Sanchez' direct kick from 25 yards out went off the 49er wall and eventually led to one of eight corners by The Beach. The Hornets though would have just four shots on the day thanks to a stingy 49er defense. LBSU will continue their homestand on Sunday by hosting San Francisco at 2 p.m. This match can will be re-played on local television Charter Channel 3 on Saturday at 5 p.m.
