49ers Kicking Off This Weekend LONG BEACH, CA-- The Long Beach State women's soccer team will kickoff the 2004 season in grand fashion this weekend, begining with the first annual Golden Goal Fundraiser in The Pyramid on Friday at 6:30 p.m., followed by the team's first scrimmage against Biola at home on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Beach return 19 lettermen, including nine starters from last year. Three of those starters, are seniors, in first team All-Big West forward Allison Wiegand (Modesto), honorable mention All-Big West defender Shanna Wender (Fresno) and forward Kristin Travis (Davis). In addition, Marucio Ingrassia welcomes 14 newcomers to the fold. Newcomers who have made an early impression include midfielders Hilary Goldberg (Woodbridge) and Kelli Goes (Manteca). Ingrassia is in his first season at LBSU after winning five of the last seven state titles at nearby Long Beach City College. Two players came with Ingrassia from LBCC, Jenny Smith (Los Angeles) who started for the Vikings last season, and Elizabeth Romo (Whittier), who was slated to transfer to LBCC from Rio Hondo, before settling on The Beach. Tickets for the fundraiser dinner on Friday in the Ukleja Room of The Pyramid are $49 a piece and can be purchased at the door. There will also be a silent auction. All proceeds will benefit the soccer program. The 49ers open the season with a four-match homestand, beginning on August 27 and 29 against Sacramento State and the University of San Francisco.
