Ingrassia Era Begins for the 49ers LONG BEACH, CA-- The next step for Long Beach State Soccer begins tomorrow (August 11) at 8 a.m. as 50 players pull on the cleats for the first time for new Head Coach Mauricio Ingrassia. LBSU returns 18 lettermen from a team which went 9-9-0 last season. Two-a-day practices run from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the morning and from from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the afternoon at George Allen Field, prior to the team's season opener on August 27. "I'm very excited to get going. We have two and a half weeks before our first competition and we have a lot of work to do," said Ingrassia, who spent the previous nine seasons at Long Beach City College going 184-24-8 (.885) and winning five of the last seven state titles. "We have 50 student-athletes trying out and we're looking to trim it down to 25 as soon as possible. Our work is cut out for us. My number one goal is to know the exisiting team and hopefully use the first few games of the year to establish my system." Two-time first team All-Big West forward Allison Wiegand (Modesto) leads a quartet of all-conference returners. Three other players earned honorable mention accolades during their careers-- senior defender Shanna Wender (Fresno), sophomore midfielder Erin Empting (Fountain Valley) and sophomore defender Natalie Messina (Santa Rosa). The 49ers will play one scrimmage match, at home on August 21 at 4 p.m. against Biola, before opening the season August 27 and 29 against Sacramento State at 5 p.m. and the University of San Francisco at 2 p.m. The Beach, which set a school-record for victories last season, at 9-9-0, are in seventh season as a franchise. |
