Ingrassia Hires Soto, Whitman to His Staff LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State women's soccer announced that Eddie Soto has been hired as the team's assistant coach, while Wendi Whitman has been brought on as the 49ers' goalkeeper coach. Soto was a two-time All-American at CS Fullerton, while Whitman was a goalie at Stanford. "I think with Eddie's background as both a player and a coach and Wendi's goalkeeping in the Pac-10 and her own coaching experience, we have the experience and the diversity that I was looking for," said new Head Coach Mauricio Ingrassia, who was hired in May. "They are both good people and make for a very strong staff." A teammate of Ingrassia at CS Fullerton in the mid 1990's, Soto spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach for the Titans' men's team from 2001 to 2003. Soto was a two-time All-American at Fullerton, leading the Titans to the 1993 Final Four. Soto played professionally from 1995 to 2000, before taking on his first coaching job in 2001. Soto left the school as the all-time leader in goals scored (38) and total points (96), earning second team All-American honors in 1992 and honorable mention honors in 1993. Soto was a two-time prep All-American at Cerritos High School, and played on the U18 and U20 National Teams. Whitman played for the Cardinal from 1996 to 2000 as Stanford advanced to three NCAA tournaments. After college, Whitman was named the Head Girl's Goalkeeper Coach for the Olympic Development Program here in Southern California, training the best female goalkeepers in the Southern California state pool. During the summer, Whitman coaches with Soccerplus Camps, run by former 1996 Olympic Coach Tony Dicicco. She has coached over 80 goalkeepers throughout the U.S., aged 10 and under, since joining the camp in 1997. Whitman prepped at Brentwood High School, where she was a four-time All-CIF selection. |
