June 18, 2004
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State Head Men's Basketball Coach Larry Reynolds announced today that Sam Byrd has signed a Financial Aid Agreement to attend Long Beach State in the fall. Byrd (C, 6-10, 235) hails from Houston, TX and attended Compton College last year. He will be a junior and have two years of eligibility remaining.
Byrd appeared in 21 games last season for the State Champion Tartars. In league outings (South Coast Conference-North Division) he averaged 6.9 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, while overall on the year he averaged 4.9 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. Byrd was second on the team with 24 blocked shots.
Compton (17-8) made a surprising run to the 2004 state title after being the No. 12 seed heading into the Southern California Regionals. In Regional play the Tartars defeated Southwestern (79-70), Pasadena (68-63) and No. 1 seeded Los Angeles City College (64-63) to reach the state tournament in San Diego. At the state tournament, Compton defeated College of the Sequoias 76-69 in the semifinals and in the title game downed American River College 82-77.
In the 2002-03 campaign Byrd played at Paris (TX) Junior College where he averaged 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks per game. Byrd prepped at Alief Hastings High School in Houston where he was a first team All-District and all-league selection after averaging 15 points, eight rebounds and six blocks per game. His senior season he led the city of Houston in blocked shots.
"Sam is a versatile, athletic, big guy that can play a number of positions for us," said Reynolds. "He will help with our rebounding, interior scoring and defense. Plus, he played on championship teams in both high school and junior college. Right now his strength's are his defensive abilities, his shot-blocking and rebounding." |
