May 14, 2004
LONG BEACH, CA-- Long Beach State Head Men's Basketball Coach Larry Reynolds announced today that Erik Atman has signed a National Letter-Of-Intent to attend Long Beach State in the fall. Atman (C, 6-10, 280, Jr.) hails from Pittsburgh, PA and attended Columbus State College last year. He will be a junior and have two years of eligibility remaining.
"Erik will provide us with a big, skilled post presence," said Reynolds. "We are looking for him to come in and give us some experienced help in the frontline. He played on a very good JC team last year. They were ranked No. 1 the majority of the season, so he has played a very competitive level of basketball."
Atman averaged 4.1 points and 2.8 rebounds per game last year, playing in 25 games and shooting .711 from the free throw line. He earned a starting spot in the lineup in the second half of the season for Columbus State. One of his best outings was a 12-point, 5-rebound game vs. Cuyahoga in the Region X11A Tournament final.
Columbus State finished the year at 28-2 and were ranked No. 1 in the nation the majority of the season in the NJCAA Division II level. They won their first 25 games, but were upset by Cuyahoga in the Regional tournament. Cuyahoga went on to win the NJCAA Division II national title.
Atman prepped at Upper St. Clair High School in Pittsburgh, PA. He was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Columbus State and his younger brother, Andrew, was a freshman on the men's basketball team at the University of Buffalo last year. |
