Goldhammer Captures First Big West Title for 49ers IRVINE, CA--Junior Ami Goldhammer captured the first Big West title for the 49ers, winning the heptathlon competition with a lifetime-best 4,838 points on Thursday at the Big West Conference Championships. This was the first title in Goldhammer's LBSU career, and possibly the first of the weekend as she will compete for a second title, this time in the javein, on Saturday. Goldhammer was second going into the final day of competition, but soon moved to first after winning the javelin with a throw of 139'07". She held on to a 100 point lead going into the final event of the day, the 800m, and eventually came away with the win. "What makes Ami's accomplishment most impressive is that she has been competing hurt for three-quarters of the outdoor season," said Head Coach Andy Sythe. "She didn't start competing until April and she was able to fight through herniated discs in her back." Goldhammer has struggled for the majority of the season with back injuries, but they proved to be no match for her drive for a championship. "I'm excited to win. As a team is gives us 19 points to start off and it puts us in first place," said Goldhammer. "I took a lot of time off last month because of my back, but I felt pretty good today. I think the three of us together motivated each other through out the meet." Teammates Jamie Cuthbert-Allen and Nina Grubbs finished fourth and fifth respectively, picking up nine points for the women's team to add to Goldhammer's 10. Cuthbert-Allen recorded a lifetime-best 108'10" in the javelin en route to scoring 4,608 points, while Grubbs ended the competition with 4,568 points. The Big West Championships will continue on Friday beginning with the women's hammer at 11:00 a.m. and the men's steeplechase at 3:00 p.m. |
