No. 2 Long Beach State Sweeps Matadors Tyler Hildebrand Records Assist No. 3,000 in his Career
April 8, 2004 LONG BEACH, CA – The No. 2-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team defeated the No. 5-ranked CS Northridge Matadors, 3-0, in an MPSF match at The Pyramid on Thursday night. Game scores were 30-28, 30-22, 30-27.
Long Beach State improved to 23-5, 16-4 MPSF, while CS Northridge fell to 18-8, 12-7 MPSF. The 49ers have won 16 of their last 18 matches.
Jeff Wootton paced The Beach with a team-high 13 kills, to go along with nine digs. Scott Touzinsky and Duncan Budinger poured in 12 kills each. In fact Budinger hit for a .647 clip (12-1-17). Sophomore Tyler Hildebrand became the fourth player in school history to record 3,000 (3,037) or more assists in a career with a match-high 43 tonight. Robert Tarr notched six kills and six digs. As a team, the 49ers connected for a .333 attack percentage (50-17-99), and out-dug CSUN, 29-21. The Beach, however, was out-blocked, 11.5-6.0.
The 49ers edged out CSUN, 30-28 in game one, behind four kills from Touzinsky, Tarr, and Budinger. Long Beach State, however, trailed for most of the game, including an 18-16 deficit after a Stan Douglas kill for Northridge. LBSU proceeded to take the lead later in the set at 23-22, after a Matador attack error. The 49ers increased their lead to 27-23 after another CSUN hitting error. CS Northridge did manage to pull within a point at 29-28, but another attack error ended the game at 30-28.
Long Beach State took command of the match with a 30-22 game two victory. The 49ers led by as many as nine, at 20-11, after a David Lee block. Lee promptly ended the game with his third kill of the match. Touzinsky poured in five more kills in the frame. Attack errors plagued the Matadors once again in the second game, committing 10 for just a .111 attack percentage. LBSU, conversely improved its hitting in the game, registering a .303 clip (15-5-33).
