Track Heads to Irvine for Steve Scott Invite LONG BEACH, CA--The track and field team will head to Irvine this weekend for the Steve Scott Invitational on Sunday, May 2. This will give the team its first opportunity to compete at the site of the conference championship meet which will be held May 12-15. Running events begin at 10:20 a.m. with the women's steeplechase, while the field events get underway at 2:30 p.m with the men's high jump. "We are using this meet to prepare for the Big West Championships and pick up conference qualifiers," commented Head Coach Andy Sythe. "This will be the final meet before the championships for almost the entire team and will show us how ready we are for the Big West battle." With just two weeks to go, the 49ers will hope to pick up several more conference qualifiers at Irvine this weekend as they make a run for the conference title. To date, The Beach has picked up 37 female and 31 male qualifiers. Doug Lefler (javelin, 228'00") and John Temidara (high jump, 7'02.25") continue to lead the conference, while Ami Goldhammer (javelin, 154'01") is the sole female at the top for the 49ers. Those who do not qualify for the conference championships this weekend will have one more opportunity on May 8th at the Occidental Invitational. Athletes who have qualified will take that weekend off to prepare for the conference meet.
