Temidara, Sampson Highlight Big West Challenge GOLETA, CA-- John Temidara (high jump) and Stephanie Sampson (hammer) both etched their names higher in the Long Beach State record books as the 49er men's and women's teams each finished in second place at the Big West Challenge on Saturday. Temidara moved amongst some distinguished company with a jump of 7'2.25", the third-best height all-time at Long Beach State. Temidara surpassed future Bronze Olympic Medalist John Rambo's mark of 7'1.25", as he ranks behind Mel Baker (7'2.75") and Dwight Stone's record 7'7.25" on the all-time list. Stone's record was the world record at the time. Sampson broke her own school-record with a toss of 190'5" to win the hammer, and finished second in the discus with a toss of 155'0". Sampson's previous record in the hammer, set last year, was 190'1". Sampson's discus toss bettered her eighth-best LBSU mark by 2'6". The men's team finished in second place to UC Irvine's 200.5 points, finishing with 176.5 points. UC Santa Barbara (168.5) and CS Fullerton (126.5) rounded out the quadrangular. On the women's side, UCSB won with 214 points, followed by the 49ers (186.5), UC Irvine (166.5) and CS Fullerton (114). The Beach swept the competition in the hammer (Steve Holland, Sampson), javelin (Doug Lefler, Kim Heinz) and high jump (Temidara, Emily Forsythe), as they won 11 events on the day. Other winners included Holly Lipscomb in the long and triple jumps, Kenny Lawrence in the steeplechase, Shingo Suzumura in the 110-meter high hurdles and Jessica Branker in the 100-meter dash. "Our team objective was to win the Cup, so I'm a little disappointed we were not able to do that," said Head Coach Andy Sythe. "But with the number of individual accomplishments, it eases my disappointment. Not to make excuses, but we were not 100%, with those individuals at full strength, we will be a better team. It's just time for us to continue to roll up our sleeves and make a strong push into the conference championships in mid-May. The 49ers host the annual Long Beach State Invitational next Saturday. |
