49ers Open Outdoors With a Bang

Beach Start Off Outdoor Season With A Bang LONG BEACH,CA--Steve Holland was the first of many 49ers who had lifetime bests and regional and Big West qualifiers on Saturday at the 63rd Annual Jack Rose Relays. Holland won the men's hammer with a throw of 188'05", nearly seven feet better then last season's mark, earning him a trip to the NCAA Regional and Big West Championships. "We did exactly what we planned on doing at this meet," said Head Coach Andy Sythe. "We executed and stepped up to the competition and opened up with some impressive marks that will put us at the top of the conference rankings." "I'm particularly impressed with the throws group who completely dominated today, with five individual event winners for the day," added Andy Sythe. Stephanie Sampson capped off a Beach sweep in the hammer, winning with a regional and Big West qualifying mark of 178'02", followed by teammates Samantha Meredith (165'04") and Michelle Pequignot (151'08"). Serena Boykin won the shot put with a regional and Big West qualifying mark of 49'11.25". Sampson finished third in the shot with a Big West qualifying mark of 43'03.25". Boykin also threw a lifetime-best in the discus, finishing second overall with a mark of 157'07". Freshman Kim Heinz finished second in the javelin with a school-record, regional and Big West qualifiying mark of 144'05". Nina Grubbs also qualified for the Big West Championships with a throw of 123'06". John Temidara jumped a lifetime-best of 7'00.50" in the high jump, qualifying him for the NCAA Regionals and Big West Championships and will most likely rest atop the Big West rankings with his mark. Doug Lefler broke the school-record in the javelin by nearly 10 feet with a lifetime-best throw of 223'10" to win the javelin. Lefler's mark qualified him for the regionals and conference championships. Teammate Sean Blandford threw 207'09", finishing fourth overall, and qualifying him for the regionals and conference championships. Shingo Suzumura finished second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.58, qualifying him for conference, while the men's 4x400m also qualified for conference with a time of 3:20.86. Jennifer Yadon (11:00.29) and Kenny Lawrence (9:39.06) both won the steeplechase. The 49ers will take two weeks and will return to competition on Saturday, March 20 at the USC Invitational.
