49ers Cruise to 9-0 Victory LBSU 15-4 on the Season
March 6, 2004 HONOLULU, HI -- The Long Beach State softball team defeated the College of Charleston for the second time this week by a score of 9-0 in just five innings, in the 4th annual Kipa Aloha Malihini Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The 49ers improved their record to 15-4, marking the best start to a season since the 2002 campaign when they started 15-4 as well.
Marcel Torres recorded her seventh victory of the season to improve to 7-1, after five innings of work, allowing just two hits and a season-high nine strikeouts. Torres also did damage at the plate with her first home run of the season in the third inning.
Long Beach State generated two runs in the top of the second inning, courtesy of a Melanie McCauley sacrifice bunt that plated Jamie Farnworth, who reached base on a walk to start the inning. Tiffanie Wedell drove in the second run of the inning, plating Roxanne Staniorski.
The 49ers added two more runs in the top of the third inning, after Torres hit a home run over the left field wall to also score Farnworth, who singled in the inning.
Colleen Burdick hit her second home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning to push the 49er lead to 6-0. LBSU capped off the afternoon with three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it 9-0. The game was called after five innings, after Charleston failed to score two runs.
Burdick finished the day 2-for-4 with four RBI. Long Beach State faces Southern Illinois on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
