Idaho Slips Past The 49ers, 60-56 Kevin Roberts Leads 49ers With 15 Points February 28, 2004
LONG BEACH, CA-- Senior Night hit a sour note for the men's basketball team on Saturday night as Long Beach State (6-19, 4-12 Big West) dropped its eighth straight game, losing to Idaho (13-14, 9-8 Big West) 60-56. Kevin Roberts, playing in his final home game at The Beach, led the team with 15 points and seven rebounds, but it would not be enough as Idaho overcame an 11-point deficit to win.
After tying the game at 47 with just over six minutes to play, the Vandals would retake the lead for good with free throws by Tanoris Shepard at the 3:32 mark giving Idaho a 52-51 lead. The Vandals then went on a 9-5 run to close out the game and the victory.
Jibril Hodges and Lucian Graham each chipped in 10 points for the 49ers and seniors Antoine Jackson and Marcel Jackson had six points apiece. Marcel Jackson tallied seven rebounds as well. The 49ers shot .513 (20-39) from the field, but committed 18 turnovers, 11 in the second half, while Idaho had just five for the entire game.
Dwayne Williams and Shepard led a trio of Vandals in double-digits with 16 points each, and Rashaad Powell added 12. Powell also led the team with seven rebounds. Idaho shot just 36% from the field and were out-rebounded 32-to-28.
LBSU charged out of the halftime break going on a 15-2 run to lead 44-33 with 12:34 remaining after a fastbreak dunk by Cody Pearson. Idaho would come back on its own 6-0 run to close within 44-39 with 9:45 remaining. Shepard would tie the game at 47 with just 6:09 left to play.
Long Beach State went into the halftime break down 31-26. Williams had nine first half points for Idaho. The Beach held the Vandals to 38% shooting in the half while connecting on 11-23 (.478) themselves.
LBSU will hit the road for their final two games of the season next weekend as they travel to Cal Poly on Thursday, March 4 and UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, March 6. BOX SCORE |
