49ers Fall To No. 23 Utah State, 67-47 Cardell Butler Scores 23 Points For USU February 26, 2004
LONG BEACH, CA-- Cardell Butler led No. 23-ranked Utah State (23-2, 16-1 Big West) with 23 points as the Aggies defeated Long Beach State (6-18, 4-11 Big West) 67-47 on Thursday night in The Pyramid in Long Beach. The Aggies went on a 19-5 run over the final 10 minutes of the game to earn the victory, as Long Beach State lost its seventh straight game.
Marcel Jackson and Kevin Roberts each scored 10 points for the 49ers, and Roberts led the team with six rebounds. The 49ers shot .345 (20-58) from the field and were out-rebounded 34-to-29. Jibril Hodges tallied eight points and dished out seven assists, tying his career-high. Lucian Graham added seven points and Cody Pearson six.
Butler was the only Aggie in double digits, as he was 3-8 from three-point range and a perfect 8-8 at the free throw line. Mark Brown added nine points and four assists to the Aggie cause and Mike Ahmad and Ian McVey both had seven points. Utah State shot .511 (24-47) from the field for the game, but a blistering .667 (16-24) in the second half which keyed its victory.
The 49ers closed with 39-38 after a three-pointer by Graham with 14:25 remaining, but Utah State would go on a 9-0 run to take a 48-38 lead with 12:25 remaining. A short jumper by Pearson cut the deficit to 48-42 at the 10:23 mark, but the 49ers would not score another point for the next 7:48 and the Aggies were able to push its lead to 63-42 with 3:41 left.
Long Beach went into the halftime break down 29-23 after a solid first half. Neither team shot the ball well, the 49ers .310 and USU .348, but the Aggies were 11-13 at the free throw line while the 49ers were just 2-5. Butler had 13 points his game-high 23 points in the first half for the Aggies.
LBSU will take on Idaho on Saturday, February 28 in its final home game of the season. It will be Homecoming on the 49er campus.
