49ers Defeat No. 1-Ranked Bruins, 3-0 Wootton Leads Offense With 15 Kills
February 11, 2004 LOS ANGELES, CA – The No. 5-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team upset the No. 1-ranked Bruins of UCLA, 3-0, in an MPSF match at Pauley Pavilion on Wednesday night. Game scores were 30-19, 30-28, 30-25.
Long Beach State improved to 10-3, 5-2 MPSF, while the Bruins fell to 10-2, 5-2 MPSF.
Jeff Wootton paced The Beach with a team-high 15 kills, while adding four digs,a nd one ace. In fact it was Wootton's lone ace that concluded the match. MPSF Player of the Week, Scott Touzinsky poured in his second double-double of the season with 12 kills and 11 digs. Nate Hagstrom chipped in with a career-tying high 11 kills. Middle blockers, David Lee and Duncan Budinger combined for 14 kills (no errors) on 23 swings for a .609 attack percentage. Tyler Hildebrand set the offense with 48 assists, and added three blocks. Hildebrand moved past Mark Ekins for fifth all-time (since 1988) with 2,287 career assists. Steve Klosterman notched a match-best 18 kills in the losing effort for UCLA.
As a team, Long Beach State connected for a .394 attack percentage (53-12-104). In fact it is the seventh time this season that LBSU has hit .350 or better in a match. The 49ers hit a blistering .560 clip in game one with 15 kills on 25 swings. LBSU out-dug (39-33) and out-blocked (12-7) the Bruins. The loss, just the second of the year for UCLA, snapped its six-match winning streak. The 49ers have won three straight over the Bruins, and two straight in Pauley Pavilion.
