49ers Fall 62-57 Despite Late Run
SAN FRANCISCO, CA-- Aisha Hollans (Berkeley) made her awaited Long Beach State debut with a game-high 17 points, but the 49ers (3-2) were outrebounded 47-to-26 as the University of San Francisco (5-3) held off a late rally by The Beach to win 62-57. Mary Jane Krueger led USF with 14 points and 10 rebounds, as Toni Russell and LaShaunte Stephens had 12 points a piece. The Hilltoppers shot 42 percent for the game and 46 percent in the second half. Crystal McCutcheon (Lancaster) added 15 points, while Candice Wilson had 10 points for LBSU, who shot 40 percent for the contest and 43 percent in the second half. USF led by six for much of the second half, before LBSU scored four unanswered points capped off with Wilson's steal and layup with l:57 left to make it 56-54. But Toni Russell would get a key offensive rebound after two missed free throws by Krueger, which led to Jennifer Katsuyama hitting a running jumper with 1:05 left to put the contest out of reach. USF built its lead thanks to a Stephens three-pointer with 10:42 left to make it 44-36. After the 49ers took a 30-27 lead with 17:56 left, USF went on a 14-4 run, capped by a Stephens layup at 12:09 to lead 41-34. LBSU had used a 10-2 run over the last minute of the first half and the first two minutes of the second half to lead by three early in the second half. The 49ers scored four quick points over the final minute of the first half to close to within 25-24, as a steal and layup by Candice Wilson made it 25-24 with two seconds left. LBSU turned the ball over 14 times in the first half and shot just 37 percent. while USF was not much better, hitting 38 percent and committing 14 turnovers. Hollans scored the first points of the ballgame, but played just 10 first half minutes after committing two early fouls. The 49ers remain in the Bay Area through Sunday when they travel to California for a contest at 2 p.m. LBSU returns home December 20 against Houston. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
