Two 49ers Named All-Big West IRVINE, CA-- Long Beach State midfielder Allison Wiegand (Modesto) became the school's first four-time All-Big West selection, while sophomore defender Natalie Messina (Santa Rosa) was named honorable mention for the second time in her career, as announced by the conference office and voted on by the league's coaches. For Wiegand, a four-year starter, she finished her career with a modern 49er record of 18 goals, 10 assists and 46 points. Her 115 career shots ranked second all-time, while her 72 career games was also second all-time. Wiegand was named to the second team for the second time in her career, following first team selections in 2002 and 2003. Wiegand led The Beach with 12 points, which included four goals. She will leave the school as one of only three, two-time, first team selections, earning those accolades at all three positions throughout her career. Messina, who was named the MVP at the 49er and Bluejay Classics, and earned all-tournament honors at all three tournaments this season, anchored a defense which set the school-record for shutouts with seven. Messina was named honorable mention All-Big West as a freshman in 2002, before redshiritng last season with a dislocated fibula. The 49ers went 6-9-3 in 2004, starting the year with the best non-conference record since the program's re-start in 1998, at 5-3-1. |
