Love and Basketball Comes Back to Win 78-74
LONG BEACH, CA-- Petra Gläser missed a potential game-tying jumper with 10 seconds left as Love and Basketball came back to defeat Long Beach State 78-74. Michell Greco, who hit the go-ahead jumper with under a minute left, finished with a game-high 27 points. The Beach dropped both of its exhibition game as the 49ers open the season next Wednesday at home against Montana at 7:30 p.m. L&B, now 6-2 on its 10-game tour, had won by an average of 11 points over its first seven games. A mini 5-0 run by L&B gave the visitors their first lead of the half, at 73-72,with 1:55 left, as Greco's jumper with 56.7 seconds left kept them in front at 75-74. Jayme Connors missed a chance to tie it with 30.4 seconds left, missing the front end of a 1-and-1, as L&B converted 1-of-2 free throws to set up the final play with 20.7 ticks left. Gläser (Amtsberg, Germany) led the 49ers with 18 points, while Christina Mack (Glendale, AZ) added 13 points. Crystal McCutcheon (Lancaster) purchased a double-double of 10 points and 11 assists as LBSU shot 41% for the contest, after a 34% clip in the second half. Greco converted 10-of-17 from the field, as she was followed by USC product Denise Woods' 15 points and nine rebounds. L&B shot 40% for the game, rebounding with a 48% clip in the second half. L&B finished the game on a 10-2 run. The Beach fought through 15 first half fouls to lead 42-37 at the half, closing the half on a 13-6 run. LBSU shot 47% in the first half, while L&B hit 32%, but converted 13-of-17 free throws. After a slow start, L&B took its first lead of the game, at 31-29 with 3:52 left on a Britton jumper, capping a 19-9 run. Woods and L&B battled back to tie the game at 28-28 with five minutes left after being held without a field goal over the first five and a half minutes. Seven straight points by Greco closed the deficit to 28-26 with 5:25 left. The 49ers built a 20-14 lead after opening the contest on an 11-2 run over the first 5:37, as L&B missed its first nine shots. The 49ers were without Aisha Hollans and Fernanda Santos due to NCAA certification, and Cynetha Rush and Val Willhoit due to injury. LBSU will celebrate the 10th Anniversary of The Pyramid on November 30 against San Diego when all fans will be admitted for free.
