49ers End Season in 0-0 Tie
LONG BEACH, CA-- Despite taking seven shots on goal and outshooting UC Riverside 20-to-13, Long Beach State (6-9-3, 1-6-2 Big West) tied visiting UC Riverside (13-2-4, 3-2-4 Big West) 0-0 in the season finale for both clubs. Nine of the 49ers shots came in the two, 10-minute overtime periods. For the 49ers, it was their record seventh shutout of the season. The 49ers had numerous opportunties to score, taking advantage of backup gaolie Katie Blank in the early part of the second half with two quick shots after Tawny Poggio was knocked out of the game at 46:16 after running into 49er defender Natalie Messina (Santa Rosa). Six of LBSU's seven shots on goal were over the final 64 minutes. The 49ers tried to strike again in the 83rd minute only to be denied on two corner kicks. Freshman Kelli Goes (Manteca) nearly scored the game-winner in the 95th minute as her curve-ball curved right and struck the top of the post. Elizabeth Romo (Whittier) also had a chance, sending it ahead for Kristin Travis (Davis), only to see Blank knock it loose in the 103rd minute. It was the final match for three, four-year starters, Travis, Shanna Wender (Fresno) and Allison Wiegand (Modesto). Travis ended her career first all-time in career games (73), tied for seventh in goals (10), tied for fifth in career assists (10), and seventh in career points (30). Wiegand ended with 72 career games, second all-time, 18 career goals (third), 46 career points (third) and tied with Travis for career assists. Wender played in 67 career games, eighth all-time. The 49ers will host an end of the year banquet at Khoury's in Long Beach on December 6.
