Cal Poly Squeaks By 49ers
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA-- Defending Big West Champion Cal Poly (6-1-3, 2-0-0 Big West) scored just prior to halftime and then held on for a 1-0 win over visiting Long Beach State (5-5-1, 0-2-0 Big West) on Sunday afternoon. The 49ers had their chances, as Cal Poly goalie Liz Hill was forced to make eight saves on the day. In the first half both teams went back and forth, not getting much momentum, as a lucky break by Cal Poly gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead at the half. Over the next 45 minutes it became a game of keep away for Cal Poly. Sharon Day scored just 52 seconds prior to halftime to give Cal Poly a 1-0 lead. Day was the lucky recipient of the Mustangs' corner deep in the box and scored at 44:08 The 49ers had a couple of chances to take an early lead in the game thanks to two Manteca-area freshmen, as a shot by Katelyn Quaresma (Manteca) in the 15th minute and Kelli Goes (Manteca) attempt in the 43rd minute both were saved by Hill. Hill had four first half saves. LBSU had a chance to tie it in the 69th minute, but Elizabeth Romo (Whittier) just missed a breakaway on an open net, as two Mustang defenders closed quickly and forced the ball to squirt out of bounds. Shanna Wender (Fresno) continued her strong play on the 49er backline over the weekend, as the senior regularly was able to clear the ball prior to a significant Mustang attack. The 49ers return home next weekend when they host Pacific on Friday at 4 p.m. and CS Northridge on Sunday at 2 p.m. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
