49ers Fall 3-0 to First Place CS Fullerton
LONG BEACH, CA-- First place CS Fullerton (10-7-1, 6-1-1 Big West) kept itself alive in the battle for the conference title, defeating Long Beach State (6-9-2, 1-6-1 Big West) 3-0 on Friday afternoon. Erin Shelton scored a goal and added an assist, both in the second half to put the contest out of reach. The Titans fired away early, taking four shots over the first 10 minutes of play, including a 35-yard skip shot which slid by 49er goalie Tara Gotthardt, at 2:28, to give CSF an early 1-0 lead. The Beach then settled down allowing just three shots the rest of the half to hold it to a 1-0 goal advantage. Then in the second half, Fullerton used a goal form Shelton off a pass from Rebekah Patrick to lead 2-0, at 62:34, before Shelton passed off to Kandace Wilson 1:04 later to make it 3-0. Fullerton outshot LBSU 16-to-6 for the match. Four of the Niners' six shots were saved by Titan goalie Karen Bardsley. The Titans and UC Santa Barbara entered today's contests tied a top the Big West standings. The 49ers will close out the season with UC Riverside on Sunday at 2 p.m. Prior to the start of the match, the 49ers will honor seniors and four-year starters Kristin Travis, Shanna Wender and Allison Wiegand.
