Gauchos Win With Second Half Surge
SANTA BARBARA, CA-- UC Santa Barbara (6-4-1, 1-0 Big West) took the Big West Conference opener on Friday night, outscoring Long Beach State (5-4-1, 0-1 Big West) 4-1 in the second half. The 49ers had a strong first half and were smelling upset over the first 50 minutes, even leading early in the second half, before the Gauchos fired off 14 second half shots en route to the win. Randi Johns had two of the goals for UCSB, while Darci Gwartz had three assists. Both teams came out firing to start the second half, as the Gauchos countered an early LBSU goal with two of their own to lead 2-1 at 59:30. Elizabeth Romo put the 49ers on the board, at 48:27, taking a touch pass from Kristin Travis and scoring from 18 yards out. Four minutes later, Randi Johns scored on a rebounded shot by Kristyn Bright to tie it at 1-1. Jennifer Borcich, who had been flanked by Natalie Messina most of the night, found a seam and took a pass from the right side from Darci Gwartz to give UCSB the eventual game-winner at 59:30. Borcich, a two-time Big West Offensive Player of the Year, scored her seventh goal of the year to make it 2-1. The Beach attacked and remained on the offensive for much of the first half, taking eight corner kicks and five shots over the first 45 minutes. UCSB managed just four first half shots. The Gauchos put the contest away with a score from Kristyn Bright in the 72nd minute to make it 3-1. In the 18th minute, the 49ers had a chances to break a scoreless tie as two corner kicks and a blocked shot by Alex Rowinski both went awry for LBSU. The Gauchos had one of only a few chances in the first half to break the scoreless tie as two shots by Allie Kueny, of which one was saved by Gotthardt, were unsuccessful in the 31st minute. LBSU was outshot 18 to 7 for the contest. The 49ers continue Big West play on Sunday for a contest at Cal Poly at 11 a.m. The Beach return home after their seven match road trip next weekend when they host Pacific and CS Northridge. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
