49ers Fall At Pacific, 70-55 Two-Game Win Streak Snapped In Stockton January 8, 2004
STOCKTON, CA-- The University of the Pacific defense forced 17 Long Beach State turnovers en route to a 70-55 Big West Conference victory on Thursday night in Stockton. Christian Maraker led the Tigers (8-6, 3-0 Big West) with 23 points, as four Tigers scored in double figures. Kevin Roberts led the 49ers (4-8, 2-1 Big West) with 17 points. The loss snapped a short two-game win streak by the 49ers and gave Pacific sole possession of first place in the league standings.
Pacific shot an impressive .583 (14-24) from the field in the second half to keep the 49ers at bay. Tyler Newton, who had a season-high 12 points, scored 10 points in the second half and was a perfect 6-6 from the field. The 49ers trailed by just three, 31-28, at 19:27 on a tip-in by Marcel Jackson. Pacific then went on a 9-2 run over the next 4:23 to take a 40-30 advantage. The closest the 49ers would get the remainder of the game would be eight points, 59-51, at 3:02. Pacific hit 6-7 free throws in the final 3:13 of the contest.
Freshman Kevin Houston tallied nine points and three assists for the 49ers, while Jackson finished with eight points. Jibril Hodges and Antoine Jackson both had six points, but Roberts (17) was the only 49er in double digits. The 49ers did out-rebound the Tigers 34-29, as Roberts and Antoine Jackson both had five.
Pacific finished the evening with 19 assists and just nine turnovers. Tom Cockle added 13 points and four assists while David Doubley and Newton both had 12 points. Point guard Miah Davis had seven assists and two steals.
The 49ers shot .407 (22-54) from the field, but went to the free throw line just nine times, hitting seven. Pacific shot an even .500 (26-52) from the field and were 11-16 at the charity stripe.
In the first half Pacific opened up an early 12-point lead, 20-8, at the 9:55 mark. Long Beach fought back with a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to 22-18 after a Hodges three-pointer. Pacific pushed the lead back up to 10, 28-18, before settling for a 31-26 halftime lead. Long Beach was just 11-29 (.379) from the field in the first half and had 10 turnvoers.
The 49ers will play at CS Northridge on Saturday in the Matadome at 7:00 pm.
