Quickly: Long Beach State will participate in the 40th annual Elephant Bar Collegiate Invite this weekend, January 9-10 in Santa Barbara. Long Beach State is the designated #1 seed and will face the #8 seeded Stanford Cardinal on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The 49ers will either face UC Santa Barbara or CS Northridge on Saturday, January 10. Last Match: The Long Beach State men's volleyball team, ranked No. 6 by Volleyball Magazine, won its 2004 season opener with a 3-0 sweep over the University of La Verne Tuesday night (1/6) in The Pyramid. Game scores were 30-9, 30-19, 30-23. David Lee paced The Beach (1-0) with a match-best eight kills and a career-high tying nine block assists. Teammate Scott Touzinsky registered seven kills, four aces (120th career ace), and seven blocks. 2003 AVCA Newcomer of the Year, Tyler Hildebrand recorded 32 assists, six digs, and three blocks, while Yassir Sliti (seven kills, .875 attack percentage, four blocks) highlighted the top 49er scoring. Long Beach State registered a .369 attack percentage (36-12-65) and 17.5 total team blocks (31 Block Assists, 2 Block Solos). Long Beach State jumped on the Leopards early in the first frame with an 8-0 run to begin the match. The 49ers increased their lead to 20-5 after a Lee kill, and a 30-9 victory punctuated by a Touzinsky kill.The nine points allowed by the 49ers were the fewest in the 30-point rally scoring system in program history.
Ace in the Hole: Senior Scott Touzinsky recorded four aces versus La Verne on Tuesday night in The Pyramid, giving him 120 career aces. Touzinsky needs just 12 more aces to tie Brent Hilliard (132) for the all-time career mark in program history.
Touzinsky: 1,000 and Climbing: Last season, Scott Touzinsky became just the 12th player in school history to record 1,000 career kills. After notching seven kills in opening night (1/6), Touzinsky now has 1,097 career kills.
49ers Ranked No. 6: Long Beach State enters the 2004 campaign at #6 in the country, according to the pre-season poll released by Volleyball Magazine. The AVCA Poll (coaches poll) will be released later in January. Lee Starts off Right/Notches Career Kill #700: Senior David Lee tied a career-high nine block assists versus La Verne on Tuesday night. Lee also recorded a match-best eight kills in the 49er victory. His eight kills gave him 702 kills for his careerBlock Party: Long Beach State recorded 17.5 total team blocks versus La Verne on Tuesday night (31 block assists, 2 block solos). David Lee registered nine block assists, while Scott Touzinsky had the two solo blocks to go along with five block assists.
Running the Offense: Last year's AVCA Newcomer of the Year and MPSF Freshman of the Year, Tyler Hildebrand netted 32 assists, six digs, and three blocks versus La Verne on Tuesday night. Hildebrand currently has 1,625 career assists. Hildebrand is 375 assists away from becoming the sixth player in school history (since 1998) to record 2,000 or more career assists.
Lee Nets High Percentage: Entering the 2004 season David Lee has compiled a career attack percentage of .415, 4th highest all-time at Long Beach State. This season Lee has eight kills (three errors) on 15 total attempts for a .333 attack percentage. Currently Lee's career hitting percentage stands at .414 (4th highest in program history). Long Beach State Establishes New (Modern) Record: In its season opening victory over La Verne on Tuesday night, LBSU cruised to a 30-9 game one victory. The nine points allowed by the 49ers were the fewest in any game in the 30-point rally scoring system in program history. In fact all nine points scored by La Verne came off Long Beach State miscues. So in the old side-out 15-point system, the 49ers would have taken game one 15-0. |
