49ers Cruise to Victory in Season Opener Touzinsky Records Career Ace No. 120
January 6, 2004 LONG BEACH, CA-- The Long Beach State men's volleyball team, ranked No. 6 by Volleyball Magazine, won its 2004 season opener with a 3-0 sweep over the University of La Verne Tuesday night in The Pyramid. Game scores were 30-9, 30-19, 30-23.
David Lee paced The Beach (1-0) with a match-best eight kills and a career-high tying nine block assists. Teammate Scott Touzinsky registered seven kills, four aces (120th career ace), and seven blocks. 2003 AVCA Newcomer of the Year, Tyler Hildebrand recorded 32 assists, six digs, and three blocks, while Yassir Sliti (seven kills, .875 attack percentage, four blocks) highlighted the top 49er scoring. Long Beach State registered a .369 attack percentage (36-12-65) and 17.5 total team blocks (31 Block Assists, 2 Block Solos).
Ricky Estrada and Matt Cornell led the Leopards (0-1) with seven kills each in the losing effort. La Verne hurt itself with 34 attack errors in the match.
Long Beach State jumped on the Leopards early in the first frame with an 8-0 run to begin the match. The 49ers increased their lead to 20-5 after a Lee kill, and a 30-9 victory punctuated by a Touzinsky kill. The nine points allowed by the 49ers were the fewest in the 30-point rally scoring system in program history.
The 49ers travel to UC Santa Barbara this weekend for the 40th annual E-Bar Collegiate Invite, January 9-10. Long Beach State is the No. 1 seed in the tournament and will face the No. 8 seeded Stanford Cardinal at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
