49ers Drop Second Straight SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA--The 49ers (4-7, 0-2 Big West) cut a 15-point lead to three in the closing seconds, but could not get any closer, dropping its second straight Big West contest, 68-64, at Cal Poly (6-5, 2-0 Big West) on Monday evening. It is the worst start to a Big West season since 1997-98. Candice Wilson scored a season-high 19 points, while Lauren Bull and Crystal McCutcheon added 12 points a piece. LBSU shot just 43% for the game, hitting 10 of its first 20, before missing 19 of its next 25. Cal Poly was led by Sparkle Anderson's 15 points and Heidi Wittstrom's 12 points as the Mustangs hit 22 of 33 from the free throw line. Cal Poly shot just 38% for the game. Cal Poly opened the second half on a 19-7 run, leading 51-36 with 9:48 left. After Cal Poly took a 53-38 lead off a Sarah Grieve jumper at 8:46, LBSU whittled the score down to 65-61 with 1:39 left on a Petra Gläser layup. Gläser, the team's leading scorer, was inserted back into the lineup moments earlier, playing just three second half minutes due to four fouls. Over the final two minutes, Cal Poly missed three of four free throws as the 49ers pulled ever closer. The 49ers came within 67-64 with 23 seconds left on a Gläser three-pointer and had a shot to pull closer with 12 seconds left. After a missed free throw from Catrina Taylor gave LBSU a shot with 12 seconds left and Cal Poly still up 67-64, Connors trying to send the ball up court sent it into the hands of Holly Richards for the final turnover of the game. Richards hit one of two to make it a two possession game with seven seconds left, virtually ending it at that point. Cal Poly took a late lead in the first half after a five-point lead by the 49ers, to lead 32-29 at the break. Cal Poly shot 33% compared to LBSU's 40% clip. The 49ers return home for a mini two-game homestand against Pacific on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and against CS Northridge on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Both games at The Pyramid. |
