49ers Drop 2-0 Decision at San Diego State SAN DIEGO, CA-- Kim Castellanos (Escondido) scored both goals in leading San Diego State (1-2-0) to a 2-0 defeat over visiting Long Beach State (0-3-0). The 49ers best chance to break through on the scoreboard came in the first 20 minutes, but Castellanos stopped the momentum in the 27th minute, scoring on a penalty kick in leading the Aztecs to its first win of the season. The 49ers had numerous chances, offensively, over the first 20 minutes, taking three corners over the first six minutes, before missing two shots on goal in the 13th and 20th minutes. Abie Curry's (Chico) shot missed wide on a give and go from MacKenzie Blechel (Forestville), as the 49ers fastbreaked off a SDSU shot in the 13th minute, and Kristin Travis' (Davis) shot sailed high in the 20th minute after Heather Kindschi's (Huntington Beach) lead-in from the left side was batted around and gave Travis a good look from the right side. A foul set up the Aztecs' first goal of the afternoon, as Castellanos scored off a 10-yard penalty kick at 26:09 to give SDSU a 1-0 lead. Castellanos added her second goal off a give and go from Holly Huppert to put the contest away at 63:49. All-Big West (HM) defender Natalie Messina (Santa Rosa) missed her first contest since injuring her left leg on Sunday in Palo Alto. An MRI will be performed on Friday to discover the extent of the injury. She was in a soft brace on the sidelines during today's contest. "If we continue to play like this, we will be last in conference. It's an embarssament on our part," said third-year Head Coach Peter Reynaud, whose team managed just three shots today and eight in three matches, despite allowing just four goals. "There are no excuses. It's back to the drawing board." The 49ers return home on Sunday to face Hawaii, who was 1-1-0 entering Friday's contest with CS Northridge. |
