Wiegand Tallies Lone Score in 1-0 Win LONG BEACH, CA-- Allison Wiegand (Modesto) took a perfect pass from Nicole Cross (Cathedral City) and scored the winning goal in the 76th minute to give the Long Beach State 49ers (4-5-0) and 1-0 victory over visiting Weber State (2-5-2). The Beach have now won four of its last five, three by shutouts, heading into Big West play next weekend. "Honestly I could not have asked for a better ball than what Nicole gave me," said Wiegand, who scored her second goal of the season. "I one touched it and it was it. It was a good setup and it made it easier to finish." Wiegand broke the tie at 75:06, one touching a pass from Nicole Cross, who had passed it from the penalty circle to the left side, in setting up the winning score. The third time was the charm for Wiegand, who had two chances earlier to break the scoreless tie. Wiegand's first shot in the 11th minute bounced off the side post, while another shot in the 30th minute was caught by goalie Kandice Golar. Weber State's best chance to score came in the 41st minute as a foul neglected a favorable corner kick well inside the penalty box. The 49er defense held WSU to just four first half shots and 11 for the contest. LBSU had 16 shots. The 49ers open up Big West play next weekend when it hosts pre-season favorites, UC Santa Barbara on Friday at 4 p.m. and No. 23-ranked Cal Poly on Sunday at 1 p.m. |
