Robin's Two Goals Lead Beach to Win at Classic LONG BEACH, CA-- Not only did freshman Jen Robin (Fair Oaks) connect on her first two career goals, but she also led the Long Beach State women's soccer team (1-4-0) to a 2-0 win over visiting Eastern Washington on the first day of the 49er Classic. The win snaps a four-match scoreless streak for the 49ers and gives The Beach momentum heading into the final day of its own tournament. "I was just happy to be there at the right time. I made a lot of mistakes today, and I think I owed it to my teammates to put some in," said Robin, one of eight freshman in the game. "We changed our system this week and I feel our team's really starting to come together. It feels good to win and I think we're getting one step closer every game." Robin's (pronounced ROW-bahn) first score came at 19:12, as the freshman was able to tap home a cross from junior Allison Wiegand (Modesto) to give The Beach a 1-0 advantage. Robin though was not done, as she benefited from a batted around shot in the penalty box from teammates MacKenzie Blechel (Forestville) and Abie Curry (Chico) to seal the victory, at 86:05. For Curry, the assist tied her with Kelli Barret for for the 49er all-time record for total points in a career (25). LBSU had not scored over its first four matches, and not since November 1 of last year, a span of 535 minutes. The second day of the 49er Classic is on Sunday, featuring Eastern Washington and UC Santa Barbara at 10 a.m. and the 49ers and Southern Utah at 1 p.m. UC SANTA BARBARA 6, SOUTHERN UTAH 0: The Gauchos (2-2-1) fired off 33 shots en route to a 6-0 rout of Southern Utah (0-5-0) in the day's earlier match as Jennifer Borcich tallied two goals and an assist and Kristyn Bright added a goal an assist. The duo's three goals came in a five minute barrage midway through the second half, as Borcich fired her first one home at 71:32 off a rebound from Morgan Tanner, before beating Thunderbird goalie Megan Flowers at 75:43 off a pass from Bright and sending her second home at 75:43. Bright's lone goal was sandwiched in between, scoring at 74:01 from the right side, 18 yards out. UCSB took 16 first half shots as Cinthia Ruiz scored nine minutes into the match off of a Krystal Sandza whiff at 8:48 and never looked back. |
