49ers Hold Its Own With Cardinal PALO ALTO, CA-- Long Beach State (0-2-0) held its own with the No. 4-ranked Cardinal (1-0-0), falling 1-0, despite losing two starters in the first half, while holding the Cardinal without a goal for the first 82 minutes of action. Allyson Marquand finally broke through the 49er defense at 82:04, stealing a pass intended for 49er Chelsea Conas (Merced) just outside the penalty box, dribbling in, and firing it into the upper right corner to give the Cardinal a 1-0 lead. Two key saves by LBSU goalie Meghan Hartwyk (Los Alamitos) in the 56th and 87th minutes kept the score close. Leah Tapscott had a chance to break the scoreless tie in the 56th minute firing it from six yards out from the left side only to see 49er goalie Meghan Harwyk (Los Alamitos) smother the shot. Tapscott had another chance in the 86th minute, but a diving save by Hartwyk kept it at 1-0. The 49ers and Cardinal played to a 0-0 tie at the half, as the 49er defense survived nine first half shots. The Cardinal had 15 shots for the game. The 49ers lost two starters in the first half-- defender Natalie Messina (Santa Rosa), who was carried off the field after severely injuring her left leg after a header at midfield in the 26th minute, and Kat Avendano (Buena Park) who was able to walk off the field in the 36th minute after suffering a concussion. The 49ers travel to San Diego State on Thursday. |
