49ers Drop Opener Despite Strong First Half LONG BEACH, CA-- Despite a strong defensive first half, Long Beach State (0-1-0) was unable to get by San Diego (1-0-0), as the Toreros defeated LBSU 1-0 in the season opener for both clubs. Michelle Rowe (Calgary, Aberta), who was flanked by defender Natalie Messina (Santa Rosa) for most the afternoon, benefited from a short goal kick from LBSU goalie Meghan Hartwyk (Los Alamitos) to score the only goal of the afternoon. After Marie Claude-Henry stole the goal kick just outside the penalty box, Henry passed it to Rowe, who scored from about 12 yards out. The Beach shut down the Torero offense in the first half, limiting USD to just three first half shots. San Diego though would break through with eight attempts in the second half, including the winning score. The 49ers managed just four shots on the afternoon. The 49ers begin a two-match roadtrip, traveling up to Palo Alto to take on the No. 4-ranked Cardinal, in its season opener on Sunday, before traveling to San Diego State on Thursday, September 4. LBSU returns home Sunday, September 7 against Hawaii.
