Curry's Two Leads Beach to Win LONG BEACH, CA-- Senior Abie Curry (Chico) did what she does best. Score. Long Beach State's all-time leading goal scorer tallied both goals in a 2-0 scrimmage win over visiting Biola on Tuesday afternoon. Curry made it 1-0 at 80:04, scoring from 10 yards out off a pass from the right side from freshman Kat Avendano (Buena Park). Curry added another with 48 seconds left in the match, heading a pass from sophomore MacKenzie Blechel (Forestville) to make it 2-0. Blechel had sent it into the penalty box from deep in the right corner. "We're really young out there with only two seniors," said Curry, one of four upperclassmen to play today. "The pre-season has gotten us ready to play some pretty top teams. The more we play together, the more we are going to connect. We have a lot of good players out there, and it's going to come, like it did today for us in the second half." For the second straight scrimmage, the 49er defense stifled the opposition, limiting the Eagles to just four shots. In LBSU's first pre-season match, Azusa Pacific managed just three shots. "We played better today, especially in the second half," said third-year Coach Peter Reynaud, whose team took 30 shots. "We just need to learn how to finish. That was our dilemna. Playing with just four upperclassmen, and the rest freshmen and sophomores, I think we played pretty well." The 49ers open the regular season with two NCAA Tournament teams, by hosting San Diego, Friday at 4 p.m., before traveling to Palo Alto to take on the No. 4-ranked Cardinal on Sunday.
